The Tata Trusts’ innovative continuous blending model aims to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in vulnerable communities.

The Challenge: Addressing Micronutrient DeficiencyAcross India, vulnerable communities face significant health risks due to a lack of access to nutritious food. In Andhra Pradesh, for example, nearly 60% of children aged six months to five years suffer from deficiencies linked to birth defects, while 53% of pregnant women struggle with anaemia. Because rice is a staple for millions, fortifying it provides an efficient, scalable mechanism to reach large, at-risk populations.An Innovative, Scalable SolutionTo combat these deficiencies, the Tata Trusts collaborated with the government to introduce Fortified Rice Kernels (FRKs). These kernels, created through extrusion technology, are blended with regular rice at a 1:100 ratio. The resulting mixture is identical to regular rice in taste, aroma, and texture, making it highly acceptable to consumers.A key breakthrough was the move away from traditional "batch blending" to a continuous blending model. Developed with technical partner Sight and Life, this approach:Is Cost-Effective: It eliminates the need for expensive, high-capital equipment.Requires No Infrastructure Changes: It utilizes existing mill equipment, making it easy for local mills to adopt.Is Scalable: It can be implemented in medium-capacity mills, allowing for rapid expansion of the programme.Visible ImpactThe initiative has already generated substantial results:Production & Reach: 26,000 MTs of fortified rice have been produced and distributed, benefiting 800,000 people across the Krishna and West Godavari districts.Government Adoption: The success of this model has encouraged the state government to adopt the technology for their own Public Distribution System (PDS) projects.Improved Health and Acceptance: Community feedback from schools and anganwadis has been positive. Children show improved health outcomes and a greater willingness to consume full meals, while awareness campaigns have successfully overcome initial skepticism from expectant mothers.By reducing the cost of production and easing implementation, this continuous blending technology provides a replicable model that directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to hunger and well-being.
