As you enter the Stained Glass House, you are transported back to the 17th century. The air carries the quiet focus of the craftsmanship, while shelves lined with vibrant, textured, and coloured glass sheets catch the light in a thousand hues. Lead came, and soldering tools lay ready, evoking an era when artisans painstakingly assembled luminous masterpieces for cathedrals and palaces. Yet, this is no museum, it is a living studio where heritage meets contemporary Indian design.

Stained glass, an art form with roots in the 17th century, has adorned sacred and grand spaces for hundreds of years. In India, however, authentic stained glass remains relatively unknown. Stained Glass House is working to change that narrative, driven by a deeply personal legacy.

Stained Glass

The inspiration dates back more than three decades, when Farah, Founder and Creative Head at Stained Glass House and a mother of Bilal and Tabish, dedicated herself to introducing original stained glass techniques to the country. Her perseverance and vision laid the foundation for the studio, which was formally established in 2016. This maternal dedication continues to fuel the studio’s commitment to authenticity in a market still discovering the medium.

Evolving Tastes in a Growing Design Culture

Over the years, Stained Glass House has witnessed a remarkable shift in client awareness and expectations. As more individuals engage professional architects and interior designers, there is growing recognition that windows and glass surfaces are not merely functional but can become defining elements of a home.

“Clients today approach projects with greater intent, carefully selecting furniture and finishes. Stained glass offers a powerful way to complete this vision. Rather than leaving glass areas plain, it adds character, elegance, and identity to buildings. Light passing through stained glass creates a unique atmosphere that ordinary glass cannot achieve,” shares Bilal, Founder, Stained Glass House.

Practical Beauty for Modern Indian Homes

Modern Indian Homes

Stained Glass House has worked with numerous clients in 2BHK, 3BHK, and 4BHK apartments. In these spaces, strategic placements yield striking results:

  • Shaft windows that bring artistic light into rooms
  • Kitchen windows and ceiling features
  • Main doors transformed with custom stained glass artwork
  • Partitions and decorative danglers

For enhanced safety and durability, Bilal and Tabish, Founders of Stained Glass Studio, integrate stained glass within Double Glazed Units (DGU). Toughened glass on both outer sides protects the artwork while maintaining structural strength and earthquake resistance. Laminated glass options provide additional versatility.

The Hallmarks of Authentic Craftsmanship

The true distinction lies in the handcrafted process. Unlike printed or superficially decorated glass, authentic stained glass is an artwork in itself. It features blown glass with natural texture and variations. Individual pieces are carefully cut, ground, and joined using traditional lead soldering, the hallmark of genuine stained glass. This technique creates pieces that are lifetime investments rather than temporary decor.

Versatile Applications Across Spaces

Stained glass proves remarkably adaptable. It enhances any area where glass is used:

  • Windows, doors, and partitions
  • Skylights, domes, and ceiling panels
  • Wardrobe doors, kitchen cabinets, and cupboard inserts
  • Decorative danglers as lobby attractions or room dividers

A notable example is a large 5-foot round panel requiring 45 days of meticulous work. Artisans cut and ground each glass piece individually before assembling them through lead soldering, resulting in a breathtaking, intricate masterpiece.

Investment and Value

Pricing reflects the complexity and artistry involved, typically ranging from ₹2,000 to over ₹12,000 per square foot. Costs vary based on size, design intricacy, and the level of custom detailing required.

Prestigious Collaborations

The studio’s expertise has been recognised by leading names in hospitality and design. Projects include installations for Lemon Tree Hotels (pan-India) and Radisson Hotels, where stained glass serves as thematic centerpieces that reinforce brand identity. Stained Glass House has also collaborated with prominent interior designers and architects, including Aparna Kaushik, Simran Boparai, Sian Architects, and Studio Lotus.

A Craft That Transforms Spaces

Stained Glass House does not simply produce glass panels. It crafts timeless artworks that turn ordinary environments into memorable experiences. By preserving traditional techniques while adapting them to modern needs, the studio helps clients add depth, light, and narrative to their spaces.

In an era where homes increasingly reflect personal stories and aspirations, stained glass stands out as more than decoration — it is a living legacy of light, color, and enduring craftsmanship.
